Are you aware how people are posting
videos, multiple posts, igtv videos, banners etc expressing the same to give up
on Chinese items??...
Recently not far away from the Line of
Actual Control in Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk
engineer, innovator and inspiration behind popular film “3 idiots” from
Ladakh took to the social media to promote the boycott of all products “ Made
in China” which drew over 20 lakhs views in 2 days.
May sound easy and make you feel that
yes we can surely do it… just by giving up on some Chinese apps like tiktok, UC Browser etc. is what
you called the “Real Deshbhakti”and
hence we served our nation.
A big NO for that as in before knowing some
rational facts that you need to know why it is getting so difficult for us to
boycott Chinese products.
GROUND
REALITIES:
Trade figures suggest
that India is the biggest importer of Chinese consumer goods. India imports
almost seven times more from China than it exports to it.
In 2018-2019, India’s exports to China - $16.7 billion,
India’s imports from China- $70.3 billion…
Additionally, China’s exports to India
account for only 2% of its total exports, so even if Indians boycott all the
products will not going to impact Chinese Economy.
In our Smartphone Industry, out
of the five best selling Phone Brands in India, four are from Chinese---
Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo and Vivo.
These four brands combined dominate over
60% of the smartphone market in India. On the other hand, 30% of India’s
automobile components are met from China and about 90% of the country’s toy market is occupied by the
Chinese Products.
Thus, some of the key market sectors of
the Indian Economy are critically dependent on China.
After explaining up above facts you must
be thinking that blogger must be “Anti-National”…
that’s obviously not what I am trying to pour out to go for realistic approach for such Global Trading Giant Revolution.
ONE
STEP AT A TIME:
The rhetorical calls for boycott won’t
buy us Self-reliance or an “Atmanirbhar”
Bharat. A pragmatic or rational blueprint needed to be put in place as in below
mentioned ways:
1. A
mechanism for Import substitution needs to be worked out , by creating such
products. Alternative options that can compete both in quality & cost
against Chinese products.
2. Low R&D expenditures, especially from the
private sector, is a key challenge facing the innovation ecosystem in India.
Countries like Israel
spends as much as 4.3% of their GDP on R&D. This makes it imperative to
re-think about resource allocation & invest in research and development,
which in turn will equip our industries with the requisite technology and skill
to fight this “trade battle”.
3. The
govt. must lower down the rates at which loans are issue to Indian companies,
just like China. Recently Finance minister , Nirmala Sitharaman do have
announced for specific budget for different sectors who are battling for
survival, however now the steps should be taken to ensure these announcements
are actually implemented on the ground.
4. Additionally. The govt. must provide Infrastructure, services etc. To prepare Indian companies to compete with China.
5. Lastly,
we can diversify our “Import Basket” by importing our necessities from a host
of other countries and lessening our dependency on China.
All in all, hyper-nationalism can never be a solution for the problems that stare us in our face. However, above suggested ways would collectively beneficial , could take us to closer to self-reliance or we can say to our “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
